KILKENNY ARTS FESTIVAL

For it’s 38th year the Kilkenny Arts Festival will be taking place on August 5th until August 14th for 10 days of utter celebration in national and international creative talent in theater, dance, music, street performance, arts & crafts, classical music and literature. Among the many musicians playing is our very own Dublin born James Vincent McMorrow who is performing on the first Sunday, August 7th. Tickets range between €19 - €22. There are also many free events (ofcourse!) including the chance to “brunch” with artists exhibiting in the Visual Art section, giving you the opportunity the inquire about their work (all Visual Art events are free), or if you are looking for something more formal there will be a discussion titled “The Arts are a Luxery We Can’t Afford Right Now!” on August 6th with speakers Gerry Smyth, Finbar Bradley, Grainne Millar and Pat Cooke

BIPOLAR EMPIRE are a Dublin band who are among the list of Irish musicians playing at this summer’s Revive Music Festival in Thurles Race Course, Co.Tipperary. The event is a one day festival taking place on August 6th. Tickets are just €30.65 and can be purchased here.

BUTLER GALLERY, KILKENNY

Currently showing in the Butler Gallery, Kilkenny is an exhibition titled “From us, Through Them, To you”. Works that are on display have been taken from the Butler Gallery Collection under the theme of escapism and entrapement.

Curating this show is a group called Red Square which consists of thirteen 16-18 year olds who have been on a training course from February - April 2011 learning curatorial skills whilst also studying the Butler Gallery Collection itself. They have since April been working on the exhibition which finally opened yesterday, June 25th.

The show runs until July 24th and the gallery is open seven days a week from 10am - 5:30pm.

Ireland’s Biggest ever Quayside Party

Beginning on June 30th until July 3rd, 50 of the most beautiful and historical Tall Ships will be stopping at Waterford’s renowned quayside to celebrate in a festival of music, food, drink, fireworks, crafts, parades, street performances, cultural tours and art events. 

The race officially begins on the Tall Ships’ departure from Waterford at 7am on July 3rd, until their destination in Greenock, Scotland on July 9th. Two more races will take place thereafter and more information on those can be found here.

Upcoming in SOMA Contemporary, Waterford is an exciting exhibition of major film works taken from the collection of The Irish Museum of Modern Art.

The show opens at 7pm on June 30th and will be accompanied with a perfomance by Katie Kim.  The opening will also coincide with the first night of the Tall Ships Festival. More information on the event here
